The Naturally Better Company is an eco-luxury boutique specializing in green household, fashion and beauty products that work. Founded by sisters, Joyce and Sharon Tay, The Naturally Better Company carries earth friendly brands such as ecostore, Priti NYC, rms beauty, and Tallulah Jane, and hopes to voice out the importance of leading healthy and sustainable lifestyles.

It all started when Joyce suffered from a skin allergy many years ago. After many visits to the doctor and restricting her food consumption, she found out that it was her skin care products that caused the allergy. Joyce said, “It was pretty shocking as I was using over the counter products that everyone can get anywhere anytime.” With Sharon, she then began researching on healthier alternatives and moved to using more natural skin care products.

Unfortunately, not all organic or natural products did any good to her skin, and some products might still contain harmful chemicals. “That’s why it is actually really important to read the product’s ingredients list carefully,” said both sisters. They also emphasize that they only sell products that they have tried themselves to ensure they are performance-based and safer options. The Naturally Better Company would demonstrate these products’ effectiveness in Singapore.

Besides skin care products, the sisters also recommend ecostore Laundry Powder and ecostore Dishwash Liquid. Based in New Zealand, ecostore creates natural and plant-based household and skin care products with no nasty chemicals. ecostore is also active in research and recycling efforts to make sure that all aspects of the products are safe to both humans and the environment. Joyce and Sharon shared that, “if people would take the step to try out these products, they would love it; because it works and they would be able to tell the difference. They would actually save more, too, since these products are super concentrated.”

Joyce and Sharon also noticed that there is an increasing option of green products in Singapore compared to 5 years ago, and more people are using healthier products. However, there are still many people who are not aware of the link between products we use and its effects on our health and environment, and the importance of reading the full ingredient list on products. The Naturally Better Company therefore hopes to help spread the news.

Located on the second floor of Millenia Walk, shoppers will notice the unique earthy design of the store. There is also a hidden gem at the back of the store – a non-toxic and green nail and face bar, for those who want to indulge in a spa service. An online store based in Singapore, Tinydipity was born out of the sheer desire to help mums and to give all children better, safer options. Founded by Laurel Tan, Tinydipity carries unique and eco-friendly finds that she and mothers in Singapore can safely use for their babies.

Here’s the story:

What inspired you to launch Tinydipity?

My son, Kyle, has really sensitive skin. Because of what I went through with him when he was a baby, it triggered my obsession with discovering the purest products for babies.

We changed his wardrobe to organic apparel, his skincare to plant-based, fragrance-free, natural ones, and his toys to eco, wooden ones and made sure all the changing pads, mats are PVC-, lead-, phthalate-free. Basically, we changed the entire home environment to make sure it’s a much healthier one. And slowly but surely, his skin got much better. Just by making tweaks in the home environment and throwing out all the steroid skin cream prescriptions.

That was also when I realised that finding green products in Singapore is frustrating and more often than not, fruitless. Not only that, you also have to look beyond the label for fear of being misguided.

Tinydipity only carries products that are natural, eco-friendly, and safe to use. There must be many people, especially mums, who had similar experiences as mine. I hope Tinydipity can make their job easier in finding products that are better and toxin-free for their kids and their family.

Why did you move towards green products? Were you always a green freak?

Not really, I was merely health conscious. I knew about green products but did not care so much for them. However, after Kyle started developing skin allergies, I finally did a lot of research of the ingredients that are contained in babies’ products. The results were pretty shocking as I found out how many harmful chemicals are contained in products that are actually made for babies. Many chemical synthetics are also used to produce clothes, towels, and even changing pads. Nowadays, for the names that I could not pronounce (meaning: not naturally derived), I would just cross them out.

What makes Tinydipity different?

Tinydipity focuses on eco-cool wares that have style, quality, and design in mind. I like stuff that is niche and unique. Therefore, Tinydipity’s products not only have to make the green mark and perform well, they also have to look nice and with a certain quirkiness to them.

Do you have your own favorite Tinydipity product?

I love all of them! But if I can highlight one or two, our own in-house Tinydipity wet bags are the best-sellers. Use them as you would your regular ziplocs and plastic bags, but much healthier for the environment and safer for little ones! I choose the fabrics personally and the bags are hand sewn by a work-at-home mum in the US. Our latest Ickie wet bag design features an extra zippered pocket in front, where you can put your clean, dry stuff in while the wet and ickie go into the water-resistant interior. Wet and dry bag in one!

And our other in-house creations are painstakingly handmade by a retired mum in Singapore. It feels real good to know that we are contributing to both the environment and society at the same time, by offering work to mums working from home.

How about other brands that Tinydipity carry? How did you choose them?

It is really important for me to know my own products—and how safe they are—before letting my customers try them. I researched and tried many brands before deciding which one I should carry. Every product Tinydipity has, Kyle and I have tried them all. His current favorite is the Smiling Planet plate and bowl set. The design is lovely and cute, and they do not break easily at all. We also have Blafre lunch box and tumbler. Made from stainless steel, they are definitely safer than plastics. A lot of the products we bring in are designed in Scandinavia, because they fit my really stringent handpicking policy.

Do you think Singaporeans are becoming more eco-conscious?

Yes, but I think more can be done to educate mothers on the importance of looking at ingredients and knowing which are harmful to their babies. Take skincare for example. I find many have label promises but I can’t use them for Kyle. I hope that Tinydipity can be one of the channels to help Singaporeans get into the next step of eco-consciousness. And provide the platform to introduce parents to the coolest wares from different corners of the globe, while at the same time knowing that their delectable purchases do not emit harmful chemicals, making them the safest buys for their kids.
